GEO English February 2012

NEW UPLOAD

The other day I read about a new NASA experiment, a 12-tonne 'extreme environment test chamber' in which scientists hope to replicate conditions on the surface of the planet Venus : temperatures above 500 Celcius degrees, pressures of 92 bar, an atmosphere that is mostly carbon dioxide. The facility will help in the development of more robust interplanetary probes, the last spacecraft to land on Venus was battered by inhospitable climate and beeped its last a couple of hours later.

Reading our own cover story on controversial prospects of geo-engineering solutions to climate change, I was reminded again of the sci-fi fantasy of 'terraforming' the climate and environment of distant planets to make them more like earth. And I wonder, if or when such a prospect ever become a possibility, whether it would be greeted with the same kind of misgivings that the idea of geo-engineering seems to evoke.
