As we were sending this issue to press we got the news that Apple was joining the Fair Labor Association to help improve working conditions in its factories overseas. This is a great step forward for Apple and for anybody who cares their technology products are made and the conditions for the workers there. "No one in our industry is driving improvements for workers the way Apple is today," said Tim Cook, Apple CEO, in an internal email to all employees.Apple does get more negative press about workers conditions than most technology companies, mainly because of its high profile and almost obsessive culture of secrecy, which is something we investigate on page 24 this issue. Apple is actually the first technology company to join the FLA, and I hope others soon follow suit.
