PC Magazine Digital Edition March 2012

NEW UPLOAD

Despite Apple's complete silence on the matter, it seems safe to assume that an iPad 3 is just around the corner. I've cleared my schedule for the first week of this month on the chance that Apple holds an event and I get an invite. The speculation over what the next iPad will look like and do differently is rampant, but i think this is a good opportunity to look at what features should not be included in the next generation tablet. Progress is important, but there is no reason to gild the lily.

Apple can boost performance, but throwing a quad-core processor into the iPad3 could be a mistake. It could hurt the iPad unheralded killer feature, its battery life. A quad-core processor would no doubt please gear heads and make for a nice talking point, but Apple doesn't need to score points here. A fast, dual-core processor with little help from discrete GPU should be more than enough power to run apps and even games.
