Apple can boost performance, but throwing a quad-core processor into the iPad3 could be a mistake. It could hurt the iPad unheralded killer feature, its battery life. A quad-core processor would no doubt please gear heads and make for a nice talking point, but Apple doesn't need to score points here. A fast, dual-core processor with little help from discrete GPU should be more than enough power to run apps and even games.
